U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA reaches out to Hispanic employees and families at Feria Familiar de Salud y Seguridad in Orlando, Fla.

TAMPA, Fla. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) took its message to Hispanic employees and their families at the Feria Familiar de Salud y Seguridad – Family Health and Safety Fair – on September 29 at the Central Florida Fairground Exhibition Building in Orlando, Fla.

The fair was sponsored by OSHA, the Alliance for Central Florida Safety, the Home Builders Safety Alliance of Metro Orlando and the University of South Florida's Onsite Consultation Program.

From an exhibit booth, OSHA staff distributed Spanish language publications and answered questions about occupational safety and health issues. Spanish-speaking safety professionals, including OSHA staff, also presented safety awareness training classes that addressed subjects such as fall protection, trench and excavation safety, personal protective equipment, crane hazards, landscaping equipment safety and the safe use of scaffolds and power tools.

"OSHA is committed to ensuring a safe workplace, and we want employees and their families to recognize and implement good safety practices at home, as well," said Les Grove, OSHA's area director in Tampa. "We used this opportunity not only to focus on Hispanic employees, but also to involve and educate their family members so, hopefully, they will remind their loved ones to always follow safe work practices."

OSHA's mission is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by preventing injuries, illnesses and fatalities. Persons interested in more information about OSHA outreach activities in this area may contact Joan Spencer at OSHA's Tampa Area Office; telephone (813) 626-1177, ext. 3022.

In addition to its strong outreach program, OSHA has a vigorous enforcement program, having conducted more than 38,000 inspections last year and exceeding its inspection goals in each of the last seven years. In fiscal year 2006, OSHA found nearly 84,000 violations of its standards and regulations.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
