U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA and the State of Illinois Form Safety and Health Partnership with M.A. Mortenson Co.

AURORA, Ill. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the M.A Mortenson Co. today announced a new partnership to ensure the safety and health of workers at the Kane County Judicial Center construction project where a $40 million addition will soon be under way.

The Illinois On-site Safety and Health Consultation Program of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity will also participate in the partnership.

"This partnership will increase safety and health awareness and create an atmosphere of cooperation and assistance. We feel confident that it will lead to a safer and more healthful work environment at this project" said OSHA Area Director Kathy O'Connell, North Aurora, Ill.

A key goal of the partnership is to achieve a total lost workday injury and illness incident rate below the national average. Participants will also strive to increase the number of safety and health programs and increase the number of employees, employers and supervisors who have completed safety training.

To participate in the partnership, contractors must develop and implement a safety and health program that includes management commitment; employee involvement; work-site analysis; hazard prevention and control; and safety and health training.

Contractors will be required to establish safety programs to ensure that workers are not exposed to serious hazards associated with falls; respiratory hazards; suspended loads; electric shock; silica; noise; and unsafe equipment. All M.A. Mortenson Co. on-site supervisory employees will complete OSHA's 30-hour construction course, and employees will receive a site-specific construction-safety orientation.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
