for Proactive Workplace Safety and Health Practices Businesses in Peoria, Champaign and Clinton Dedicated to Protecting Workers PEORIA, Ill. -- Businesses from Peoria, Champaign and Clinton, Ill., have taken top honors in the third annual "Z Project" awards presented by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The awards were made May 3 for workplace safety and health practices and concepts developed by employers in 81 of Illinois' 102 counties. The Z Project aims for zero workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses. It was developed by OSHA's area office in Peoria to encourage central and southern Illinois employers to eliminate and control hazards and improve their safety and health programs. "We're delighted with this year's results of the Z Project," said John A. Newquist, director of OSHA's Peoria area office. "Participants tell us we're on the right track by challenging employers to be proactive on workplace safety and health issues and encouraging them to include their workers in the process of problem solving." This year's awards were presented in four categories. The Lifesaver Award, presented for a control that could save a life, was given to the Peoria Park District, Peoria, for installing fixed ladders instead of using portable ladders to access a 28-foot high roof. P. J. Hoerr, also of Peoria, received the Pluto Award for an unusual and innovative concept. The construction company had an excavation in unstable, Type C soil which they injected with micro cement, turning it into stable rock, thus protecting both their employees and the foundation of a historical church next to the excavation. The Alveoli Protection Award for a health control was presented to Advanced Filtration Systems Inc., Champaign, for installing baffling material on their powder paint booth vacuum blower system, significantly reducing noise levels. Highest honors, the Area Director Choice Award, went to the Clinton Power Station, Clinton, for going beyond OSHA requirements in implementing the National Fire Protection Standard 70E on Electrical Arc Flash. The Clinton Power Station not only implemented changes to their operating procedures on equipment sources over 480 volts but also took a lead role in other Exelon stations getting involved in arc flash studies. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
