Awareness among High School Students OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha Public Schools (OPS) Career Center and the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) have joined to provide students with safety and health information, guidance and access to training resources. An alliance signing ceremony is scheduled March 2. OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers. The alliances provide an opportunity to participate in a cooperative relationship with OSHA for purposes such as training and education, outreach and communication. OSHA has created more than 240 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. The OPS Career Center provides high school students with career exploration through speakers, internships and classroom instruction in such areas as construction, automotive technology, health occupations, graphic arts and printing job shadowing. The alliance will enhance the center's curriculum through it training, education, outreach, and communication goals. "Developing programs that introduce safety and health education and integrate the OSHA 10-hour Outreach Training program into the core curriculum of the career center are among the goals of the alliance," said Charles E. Adkins, CIH, OSHA regional administrator. Additionally, the alliance creates an opportunity for career center instructors to become authorized OSHA outreach trainers and for students to obtain their OSHA 10-hour cards. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
