WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) formed an Alliance today with the National Association of Institutional Linen Management (NAILM) that focuses on reducing and preventing exposure to fire and ergonomic-related hazards, hazardous materials (HAZMAT), and motor vehicle safety. "This Alliance offers us a unique opportunity to work with the National Association of Institutional Linen Management to foster safer and more healthful workplaces in the institutional linen industry," said Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Jonathan L. Snare. "We look forward to drawing from our joint expertise to provide workers the education and training they need to stay safe and healthy on the job." "Over the last couple of years NAILM members have increasingly expressed a need to be better educated about safety issues," said Jim Thacker NAILM Executive Director. "Now through our Alliance with OSHA, NAILM can help bridge the gap by offering, with OSHA's assistance, an educational forum where members can obtain the information they need." OSHA and NAILM will use their joint knowledge to develop training and education programs on fire and ergonomic-related hazards, HAZMAT and motor vehicle safety, and to provide expertise in communicating the information to employers and employees in the industry. The Alliance also encourages NAILM chapters to build relationships with OSHA's regional and area offices to address safety and health issues. NAILM will work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information to employers and employees in the industry. Founded in 1939, NAILM is a non-profit professional organization for textile care specialist and has 25 local chapters with members in both the United States and Canada. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
