OSHA Recognizes Curtis Lumber in Granville & Schroon Lake, New York,
for Excellence in Job Safety and Health

NEW YORK -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recognized Curtis Lumber of Granville and Schroon Lake, NY, for high achievement in their employee safety and health programs.

Curtis Lumber, which operates retail lumber and hardware establishments, has been re-approved as a "Star" site in OSHA's prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). Star sites meet all safety and health elements for the program, which far exceed minimum OSHA standards.

"This award highlights the continued commitment to employee workplace safety and health demonstrated by Curtis Lumber during its participation in the VPP" said Area Director John Tomich. Tomich presented a VPP flag and plaque to the company in a recent ceremony.

The company has taken positive steps to make its worksites safer and more healthful and, notably, has done an excellent job of demonstrating management commitment toward worker safety at all levels. This is reflected in the amount of training, oversight, policy, direction and communication on safety matters to employees.

VPP offers employers an opportunity to move beyond traditional safety programs by recognizing participants that successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. The VPP programs are open to deserving employers in any industry. From coast to coast, approximately 1,100 work sites participate in the program. Companies that have been accepted into the Voluntary Protection Programs represent more than 200 industries.

Requirements for application to VPP include a high degree of management support and employee involvement; a high-quality worksite hazard analysis; prevention and control programs, and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before applying to join the program.

Additional information is available from the VPP manager at the OSHA regional office in New York City at 212-337-2360.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.
