Statement by Assistant Secretary of Labor John Henshaw on
GAO's Report on OSHA Voluntary Compliance Strategies

WASHINGTON -- Assistant Secretary of Labor John Henshaw, head of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), today issued the following statement regarding the General Accounting Office's (GAO) report on OSHA's voluntary compliance strategies.

"OSHA has had great success through its voluntary and cooperative programs in promoting safer and more healthful workplaces in every major industry. The General Accounting Office's report recognizes that these compliance assistance programs are highly effective in extending OSHA's reach. They complement and augment OSHA's aggressive efforts to enforce occupational safety and health standards to achieve greater reductions in workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities.

"OSHA appreciates the GAO's recommendations to more closely evaluate the benefits of voluntary and cooperative programs and will do so with an eye towards including useful evaluation results in its strategic planning."
