Henshaw Commends Remarkable Safety Record CHICAGO -- The top official of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today praised the E&E Manufacturing Company, Inc., Plymouth, Mich., as one of the most effective employers in the nation in protecting workers by joining with state officials in welcoming the plant into the prestigious Star category of Michigan's Voluntary Protection Program (MVPP). "VPP is a roadmap to safety and health excellence, and we know that companies in VPP have injury and illness rates more than 50 percent below the averages for their industries," according to Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health John Henshaw. "E & E is now proudly joining the ranks of VPP companies that go beyond OSHA requirements by making safety and health an integral part of their company culture." Henshaw presented the Star Award to company President and Owner Wes Smith today at ceremonies at the plant. The Michigan company employs well over 200 workers in manufacturing heavy gage stampings, weldnuts, deep drawn extruded stampings, tapping plates, serrated shims and automotive seating component assemblies. The MVPP recognizes and promotes effective workplace safety and health management. In the program, management, labor and Michigan OSHA (MIOSHA) establish a cooperative relationship at a worksite that has implemented strong safety and health systems. Star participants, which meet all MVPP requirements, are at the top of the program's recognition ladder. MIOSHA will not target a MVPP-approved worksite for any regularly scheduled programmed inspections, although the site must continue to abide by all MIOSHA safety and health standards, and the agency will respond to workers' complaints and serious accidents. MVPP participating-businesses experience fewer employee injuries and illnesses, reduced workers' compensation costs, improved productivity, improved employee morale, and recognition in the community. In addition, safety and health management systems at these sites are further improved over time through the internal and external reviews that are part of the program's ongoing requirements. In fiscal year 2003, OSHA conducted almost 40,000 inspections, an increase of more than 2000 inspections over 2002 levels; more than half focused on high-hazard industries.
