OSHA and Illinois Landscape Contractors Association Planning a Safer 2004 Season for Workers

CHICAGO -- Landscaping contractors across Illinois can look forward to a safer summer season for their employees thanks to a new safety alliance between the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association and the Illinois offices of the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

OSHA health and safety alliances are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships.

"OSHA is making special efforts to improve job safety and health in the landscaping industry, due to its relatively high rate of work-related injuries," said Diane Turek, OSHA's area director in Des Plaines, Ill. "By working with the association we can educate member contractors about OSHA safety standards and prevent accidents."

The OSHA and ILCA alliance will achieve its goals through safety and health programs, training, participation in conferences and forums and sharing of best practices. Participation in the alliance is voluntary for landscaping contractors and sub-contractors. The alliance will remain in effect for two years.

Since 2001, the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 160 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. More alliance information can be found on OSHA's Web site,
