MOBILE, Ala. -- The 14th Central Gulf Coast Safety and Health Seminar and Exposition -- EXPO -- will be held March 15 and 16 at the Mobile Convention Center. This year's opening ceremonies will include the signing of an alliance between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mobile community groups to provide young workers with information about workplace hazards. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the American Society of Safety Engineers-Mobile Chapter, Mobile United and Mobile County Schools will sign the alliance on March 16 at 9 am. Following the signing, 60 students from Semmes Middle School and Clark Middle School will attend the fire safety program, one of over 20 safety and health seminars scheduled during the two-day event. "OSHA's job is to reduce workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities. The EXPO provides an opportunity for employers to ask questions, get answers from industry safety experts and improve safety and health at their workplace," said Lana Graves, OSHA's regional compliance liaison. The EXPO features safety and health information for small business owners, employees and anyone interested in improving workplace safety and health. Training sessions begin March 15 and attendees have the opportunity to earn continuing education credits. Among topics to be presented by safety and health experts are: crane safety; power line hazard awareness; fall protection; and Alabama's homeland security efforts. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board's John Bresland, will be the luncheon speaker. He will discuss the agency's responsibilities and recent chemical plant inspections. The EXPO is sponsored by: OSHA's Mobile area office; the City of Mobile; the American Society of Safety Engineers-Mobile Chapter; the American Industrial Hygiene Association-Mobile Bay Area; the Associated General Contractors of America, Inc.-Mobile Chapter; the National Safety Council-Alabama Chapter; and the Gulf-Coast Maritime Safety Association. Opening ceremonies begin at 8:00 a.m on March 15. The registration fee is $150 and includes breakfast, lunch and refreshments.
