CINCINNATI -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) entered into a partnership today with Hunt Construction Group and project trade contractors to ensure the safety and health of workers at the Cincinnati Convention Center Expansion and Renovation Project. OSHA Area Director Richard Gilgrist and William D. Mott, director of labor and safety, Hunt Construction Group, signed the partnership agreement to effectively address the hazards in the construction industry. More than 1,500 workers will be employed at the project that is scheduled for completion by December 2006. "This partnership is a major step forward to improve the safety and health of all workers at this important project in Cincinnati," said Gilgrist. "We're looking forward to a cooperative relationship with our partners who have placed a top priority on a safe work environment." The project is the fourth major construction partnership that OSHA has been involved with in the downtown area. According to Gilgrist, the Paul Brown Stadium and Great American Ballpark partnerships saved the Cincinnati and Hamilton County taxpayers millions of dollars in insurance costs. The top causes of fatalities identified by OSHA are falls, moving equipment or machinery, electrocution, and workers caught between equipment. The goal of the partnership is to eliminate or significantly reduce the number of accidents during the project to a level that is at least 15 % below the national average for construction sites. Under the terms of the partnership, contractors must conduct frequent job site inspections, provide site-specific safety orientations for workers, properly train supervisors and safety representatives, provide fall protection where work is performed six feet or more above a lower surface, and take other safety measures. Hunt Construction Group will require the use of wet cutting techniques, dust collection systems and approved respiratory protection where the potential for airborne silica exposure exists. In return for meeting these criteria, OSHA will reduce any penalties for safety and health violations by a maximum of 25%. OSHA will still conduct inspections in response to reports of imminent danger, an employee complaint, a fatality, or catastrophic accident. OSHA is dedicated to assuring worker safety and health.
