TOLEDO, Ohio -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), is joining with construction contractors, organized labor and state and local government agencies in a new partnership to make the $800 million Toledo Public Schools Project a clear example of how to keep working men and women safe in an otherwise hazardous environment. OSHA Health and Safety partnerships are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. "Construction continues to be the most hazardous industry in the country," said OSHA Area Director Jule A. Jones, Toledo. "The partnership signed today will help everyone work safely throughout the construction project." OSHA will sign the formal partnership on March 9 at the offices of the project's construction manager, LGB, LLC, and with representatives from the Toledo City School District; Ohio School Facilities Commission; Ohio On-Site Consultation Program; construction manager LGB; the Northwestern Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council; and the Northwest Ohio Carpenters and Pile Bucks union. Goals of the partnership include increasing employee hazard awareness, preventing serious accidents, illnesses, and falls, and eliminating electrical and other hazards, which account for the majority of fatalities and injuries in the construction industry. In fiscal year 2003, OSHA conducted almost 40,000 inspections, and more than half focused on high-hazard industries, including construction. The Toledo Public Schools Project involves the renovation, demolition and new construction of numerous schools. The project is expected to take 10 to12 years and at its height will employ more than 100 contractors at various sites with some 300 employees. Since 2001, the Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 80 partnerships to prevent accidents and promote job health and safety.
