OSHA, Washington Group International, Form Alliance to Foster Worker
Safety and Health at Eastern Massachusetts Jobsites

BOSTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Braintree and Methuen area offices and the Washington Group International have formed an Alliance to use their collective expertise to help advance a culture of accident prevention in the engineering and construction industry in eastern Massachusetts, particularly in the areas of cranes and rigging, hearing protection, ergonomics and respiratory protection.

Under the alliance OSHA and WGI will provide information and guidance to help engineering and construction employers provide safe and healthful working environments; reach out to contractors who may benefit from mentoring or guidance in developing, implementing or improving safety and health programs and provide them access to safety and health information and resources; and encourage contractors to incorporate a proactive safety and health culture into their day-to-day operations.

They will also work together to provide and share information on WGI's best practices and/or effective approaches in accident prevention with OSHA personnel, industry safety and health practitioners and engineering and construction contractors; promote and encourage WGI participation in OSHA's cooperative programs such as compliance assistance, VPP, Consultation and SHARP; and promote the national dialogue on workplace safety and health by sharing information regarding WGI's engineering and construction best practices with others in the industry.

An implementation team made up of representatives of both organizations will meet to develop a plan of action, determine working procedures and identify roles and responsibilities of the participants. They will confer on a regular basis to track and share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the alliance. The agreement will remain in effect for one year and will be automatically renewed annually. It may be modified at any time with the concurrence of all signatories and may be terminated with 30 days written notice from any of the signatories.

The agreement was signed on April 16 by Brenda Gordon, OSHA's Braintree area director, Richard Fazzio, OSHA's Methuen area director and Bradley D. Giles, WGI's Corporate Vice President, Environmental Safety and Health.

Washington Group International, headquartered in Boise, Idaho, was formed in July 2000 and has approximately 38,000 employees. The company provides engineering, construction, and program-management services to various markets, including environmental, government, industrial, mining, and transportation.
