Earthquake in South Asia

USAID photo.A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, on October 8, 2005, at 8:50 a.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter of the earthquake was located near Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-administered Kashmir, and approximately 60 miles north-northeast of Islamabad.

The United States responded immediately and generously to Pakistan's call for assistance following the tragic and devastating earthquake of October 8. Our response has been consistent with our humanitarian values and our deep commitment to Pakistan. The U.S. has pledged a total of $510 million in earthquake relief and reconstruction efforts to assist the people of Pakistan and to support Pakistani government relief efforts. This total includes $300 million in humanitarian relief and reconstruction assistance, $110 million in military support for relief operations, and at least $100 million anticipated from U.S. private contributions. President Bush discussed South Asia Earthquake Relief Efforts on Nov. 9, 2005.

Secretary Rice made an unscheduled stop in Islamabad, Pakistan to offer her support for recovery efforts after the Oct. 8 earthquake. [remarks]

Ambassador Crocker visited the humanitarian efforts in Muzfarrabad, Pakistan, where he observed assistance operations firsthand. The U.S. Government is participating in a multinational humanitarian assistance and support effort led by the Pakistani Government to bring aid to victims of the devastating earthquake that struck the region Oct. 8, 2005. Private Sector Relief Effort: The web site for the private sector relief effort was launched November 09, 2005. The web address is www.southasiaearthquakerelief.org.

For the many Americans who want to make private contributions to assist the victims of this disaster, we recommend that they contact the South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund, American Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, or the American Council for Voluntary International Action.
