Goal is to help contractors reduce hazards through training and information HARTFORD, Conn. - Reducing hazards and enhancing the safety and health of electrical contractors in Connecticut and New England are the goals of a new alliance among the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Connecticut Department of Labor's Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ConnOSHA) and the Rocky Hill, Conn.-based Independent Electrical Contractors of New England Inc. (IECNE). "Electrical contractors work in a variety of settings, often in construction, and can be exposed to diverse hazards," said C. William Freeman III, OSHA's area director in Hartford. "This alliance will equip contractors in Connecticut and other New England states with practical knowledge that will help them anticipate, identify and eliminate work-related hazards before they cause injury and illness." Under the alliance, OSHA, ConnOSHA and IECNE will work jointly to develop training and education programs for IECNE members regarding electrical safe work practices, scaffolding, trenching, fall protection, caught in/between hazards and struck-by hazards. This relationship will include delivery of "train-the-trainer" courses and development of workplace safety and health curricula on electrical safe work practices. These will allow IECNE members who complete the "train-the-trainer" course to then provide training to contractors in Connecticut and other parts of New England. The alliance partners also will share best practices and effective approaches to safety and health, speak and exhibit at each other's local meetings, and encourage IECNE regional council members to build relationships with OSHA's area and regional offices to address safety and health issues. The alliance was signed by OSHA's Freeman, ConnOSHA Director Richard Palo and IECNE President Ronald Bish. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 500 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
