Six resident contractors in Three Rivers, Texas, achieve OSHA recognition for safety and health management

THREE RIVERS, Texas -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recognized six resident contractors in Three Rivers for their outstanding safety and health programs.

Bay LTD, Scott Electric Co., All Tech Inspection, Brock Maintenance Inc., Veolia Environmental Services and H&S Constructors have earned membership in OSHA's prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs at the "star," or highest, level. A recognition ceremony was held at 301 LeRoy in Corpus Christi.

"This group of resident contractors operates as one unit when it comes to safety and health," said OSHA Regional Administrator Dean McDaniel in Dallas. "The outstanding efforts of all six contractors include maintaining injury and illness rates well below the national averages for their industries for the last three years, demonstrating excellence in effective safety and health management."

Achieving records of zero injuries and illnesses are Bay LTD, which employs about 44 workers who provide construction and maintenance support; Scott Electric Co., which employs about 24 workers who perform construction, installation, maintenance and design on all types of electrical equipment; All Tech Inspection, employing about eight workers who provide vessel and piping mechanical integrity inspection services; Brock Maintenance Inc., which employs about 10 workers, and conducts abrasive blasting, painting, insulation and asbestos abatement; and Veolia Environmental Services, employing about five workers who conduct tank cleaning and hydro-blasting operations.

Maintaining an injury and illness rate of 79 percent below the national average for its industry, H&S Constructors employs about 40 workers. The company provides civil and mechanical engineering services, equipment erection, piping and structural fabrication, and crane operating services.

More than 1,700 worksites in more than 270 industries nationwide have earned entry into OSHA's VPP. Requirements include a high degree of management support and employee involvement; a high quality worksite hazard analysis, prevention and control programs; and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before a company can apply to join the VPP.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
