WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced in today's Federal Register that it is soliciting Susan Harwood Training Grant applications. OSHA awards funds to nonprofit organizations to provide training and education programs for employers and employees on safety and health topics selected by OSHA. Nonprofit organizations, including community-based and faith-based organizations that are not an agency of a State or local government, are eligible to apply. The application deadline is July 20, 2007. "The Susan Harwood Training Grant Program provides funds for programs to train employees and employers to recognize and abate safety and health hazards in their workplaces," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "The program emphasizes training opportunities that reach small businesses, at-risk employer and employee populations, and employees working in high-hazard industries." Fourteen training topics were selected for this grant announcement including excavation and trench hazards, combustible dust, and driver safety. Training grants will be awarded for a 12-month period that begins September 30, 2007. There is approximately $10.1 million available for the Targeted Topic training grants. The average federal award is expected to be $175,000. Applications for grants submitted under this competition must be transmitted electronically using the government-wide http://www.grants.gov Web site. Applicants are encouraged to complete the mandatory online registration process as soon as possible. If applying online poses a hardship to any applicant, the OSHA Directorate of Training and Education is available for assistance. Applicants needing assistance may contact the OSHA Directorate of Training and Education at least one week prior to the closing date at (847) 297-4810 to speak to a representative. No extensions of the deadline will be granted.
