WASHINGTON -- Employees involved in the restoration of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge will be safer thanks to a new partnership formed between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Corman Construction Inc. of Annapolis Junction, Md. OSHA and Corman formalized the partnership at a ceremony held today. "This strategic partnership combines the cooperative efforts of labor, management and government to effectively address all aspects of jobsite safety on the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge project," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke Jr. "A cooperative effort such as this helps to promote a safe and healthful workplace environment for the construction community." A major goal of the partnership is to develop, implement and maintain effective and comprehensive safety and health programs for the bridge rehabilitation contractors, including model safety programming for over-the-water operations. The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, which crosses the Anacostia River, is a structural-steel-on-concrete structure that is 3,002 feet long by 75 feet wide. Restoration work on the bridge includes steel repair and strengthening, sidewalk rehabilitation, deck repair, installation of new lighting, reworking approaches to the District of Columbia's new baseball stadium, repainting the steel bridge members, milling, repaving and remarking. OSHA's Strategic Partnerships Program is part of Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with groups including trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1.2 million employees and more than 33,000 employers across the U.S. have participated with OSHA in 455 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998.
