ROBSTOWN, Texas -- US Ecology Texas in Robstown, Texas, has earned membership in the prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). A recognition ceremony was held at the company's facility on CR 69 in Robstown. "US Ecology Texas has demonstrated excellence in effective safety and health management," said OSHA Regional Administrator Frank Strasheim in Dallas. "Their outstanding efforts include maintaining an injury and illness rate 58 percent below the national average for their industry." US Ecology Texas, which employs about 35 workers, treats and disposes of oil and gas drilling fluids and hazardous wastes. The company is part of Boise, Idaho-based American Ecology Corp. The Voluntary Protection Programs recognize and promote effective workplace safety and health management. About 1,600 workplaces throughout the U.S., representing 280 industries, have earned OSHA's highest recognition as participants in the VPP. Participants typically achieve injury and illness rates lower than average for their respective industry. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
