HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Keystone Contractors Association (KCA) have joined forces to promote workplace safety and health for construction workers in Pennsylvania. OSHA and KCA recently entered into a formal Alliance to provide KCA members with improved hazard recognition skills and accident prevention techniques. The partnership officially began at a signing ceremony on Mar. 30, 2005 at OSHA's Harrisburg area office. OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. KCA is a nonprofit trade organization which represents 56 general and specialty contractors from throughout Pennsylvania. Through the Alliance, OSHA and KCA will develop and provide information, guidance and access to training resources to KCA members to enhance their safety training programs. The Alliance will also focus on more effective jobsite safety inspections and improved hazard recognition and control. "By arming employees with the information and training they need, we are taking a strong proactive stance against workplace hazards on construction sites," says Bob Fink, area director of the Harrisburg OSHA office, "We hope this alliance will serve as an example to contractors throughout Pennsylvania." OSHA's Harrisburg Area Office will serve as the focal point for coordination of services and events which may take place throughout Pennsylvania. Since 2001, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 150 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
