Safety Hazards at Hampton, Ga., Manufacturing Plant Agency Proposes $108,000 In Penalties ATLANTA -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited Atlas Roofing Corporation for alleged safety violations after an employee's hand was amputated in April at the company's Hampton facility. Proposed penalties total $108,000. "Strong enforcement is a key part of this Administration's efforts to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "The significant penalty of $108,000 in this case demonstrates our commitment to protecting the health and safety of American workers." OSHA issued five repeat citations to the company, with a proposed penalty of $75,000, for exposing workers to "caught-by" injuries from unguarded equipment; electrocution from uncovered electrical fittings and boxes; and falls from catwalks without guardrails, as well as an inadequate nozzle on compressed air piping. Atlas Roofing had been cited previously for similar conditions and the citations have become final orders of the independent Occupational Safety and Health Administration Review Commission. The company also received 1l serious citations, with proposed penalties totaling $33,000, for alleged violations that include failure to develop and implement lockout-tagout procedures to render machinery inoperable during maintenance and repair, obstructed exit routes and not preventing employees from being exposed to other machine guarding and electrical hazards. The company has 15 working days from receipt of the citations to contest the citations and proposed penalties before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. The inspection was conducted by OSHA's Atlanta-East area office, LaVista Perimeter Office Park, Bldg. 7, Suite 110, Tucker, Ga, phone: (770) 493-6644. OSHA has a national emphasis program to reduce amputation injuries. The agency's regional and area offices work with employers, professional associations, and local unions to help workers and managers identify and eliminate amputation hazards associated with power presses, saws, shears and slicers. Proper machine guarding is a key part of this effort. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
