Mary Kay Gets Another "Star" For Safety and Health
Ceremony to be held Jan. 15 in Dallas

DALLAS -- The U. S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will recognize Mary Kay Inc., headquartered in Dallas, for achieving eight years of excellence in worker health and safety. The national cosmetics manufacturer employs about 3,600 workers worldwide.

"For eight years Mary Kay Inc. has exhibited excellence in effective safety and health management as part of OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program," said John Miles, OSHA regional administrator in Dallas. "Congratulations Mary Kay Inc. This is an outstanding achievement. Mary Kay Inc.'s employees and managers have demonstrated their commitment to workplace safety and health, and we encourage other companies to follow their example."

Mary Kay Inc. was initially approved as a "Merit" participant in 1994, the first step in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) ladder, because the company demonstrated the potential and willingness to achieve "Star" status through plans it made to meet VPP health and safety requirements. In addition to an exemplary safety and health program, OSHA's review team found that Mary Kay Inc. had a lost workday injury and illness rate of 58 percent below the industry national average.

OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program recognizes and promotes effective safety and health management. Participants are a select group of facilities that have designed and put into practice outstanding safety and health programs in which management, labor and OSHA establish a cooperative relationship. "Star" participants meet all VPP requirements.

A ceremony to renew Mary Kay Inc.'s participation in OSHA's prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) will take place Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. at the company's manufacturing facility at 1330 Regal Row.

From coast to coast, there are approximately 1,000 work sites participating in VPP. For information on the VPP approval process and application for Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico, contact William Klingbeil at (214) 767-4736, ext. 242. Or, contact the Voluntary Protection Program Participants Association in Falls Church, Va., (703) 761-1146.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is dedicated to saving lives, preventing injuries and illnesses, and protecting America's workers. Safety and health add value to business, the workplace and life. For more information, visit www.osha.gov.
