Will focus on incorporating safety and health issues into construction process WASHINGTON -- Furthering the safety and health of construction workers is the goal of an Alliance signed today between OSHA and a national organization dedicated to all workers in the construction industry. The Construction Institute (CI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) joined with OSHA to focus on construction safety and health issues, with a particular emphasis in the area of crane safety. "Reducing injuries, illnesses and fatalities especially in the construction industry is a priority for this agency, said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "The collective expertise of the Construction Institute of ASCE and OSHA can create a significant impact on the safety and health of construction workers. This Alliance gives all of us the tools to achieve positive gains toward that end and also helps encourage employers and workers to commit to safe work practices." Added ASCE Executive Director Patrick J. Natale, P.E., F.ASCE: "ASCE welcomes this opportunity to partner with OSHA to improve safety practices at construction sites nationwide. Our Alliance with OSHA enhances our professional commitment to develop innovative solutions to maintaining the safety of the building and design trade community." The Alliance will allow OSHA and CI the opportunity to develop and deliver training and education programs, plus tool-box talks on safety and health issues relevant to workers in civil engineering, construction, and construction engineering, focusing on crane safety. Both organizations will also share up-to-date construction information including hazard and workforce trends, to help identify priorities for the development of safety and health training and outreach programs. OSHA and CI will develop safety and health information and disseminate that information through print and electronic media, including the use of electronic assistance tools and links from both organizations' websites. Additionally, both organizations will take the opportunity to speak, exhibit and appear at conferences, local meetings or other events, such as ASCE annual meetings. To promote a national dialogue on safety and health in the construction industry, OSHA and CI will perform case studies and then publicize the results to industry stakeholders. Representatives of OSHA and CI will also participate in forums and roundtable discussions on construction safety issues to help forge innovative solutions on the jobsite. Founded in 1852, ASCE represents 130,000 civil engineers worldwide and is America's oldest national engineering society. The Construction Institute was created on Oct. 1, 2000 through a merger of ASCE's Construction Division, Materials Division, and Construction Standards Council. It is the first national organization designed to meet the needs of all individuals working within the construction industry and strives to advance the knowledge and practice of construction.
