OSHA Signs Partnership with AMEC Construction Management
Includes implementation of voluntary guidelines for construction ergonomics

WASHINGTON -- Fostering a relationship that encourages construction employers to improve their safety and health performance is the foundation of a strategic partnership signed here Oct. 30 between OSHA and a leading international engineering services and construction management firm.

AMEC Construction Management, Inc. signed a formal partnership with OSHA that focuses on eliminating the four major workplace hazards impacting the construction industry: falls, electrical, caught in/between, and struck-by. Under the partnership AMEC will implement voluntary corporate guidelines for construction ergonomics at specific projects.

"We are pleased to forge this partnership with AMEC to benefit construction job site workers," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "It is our objective to significantly reduce occupational-related fatalities, injuries and illnesses in the construction industry and this agreement establishes a relationship between two parties whose mission is to make that goal a reality."

Added Lasse Petterson, AMEC's Chief Operating Officer for the Americas: "Although safety procedures are intrinsically part of AMEC's core values and daily work routines, this agreement places an additional emphasis on ergonomics issues and on minimizing preventable workplace injuries through employee training, site audits and more aggressive company guidelines. Our employees are our greatest asset and their safety and well-being is of primary concern for AMEC."

The ergonomics portion of the partnership focuses on reducing and preventing injuries that, most often, are caused by heavy lifting, working overhead, working on one's knees or in other awkward positions, and working with vibrating tools. In addition to ergonomics, the partnership stresses the implementation of enhanced safety and health management systems and increased employee training, plus recognizing subcontractors with exemplary safety and health programs. The partnership also underscores the importance of employee involvement in the daily implementation of work site safety and health.

OSHA will help AMEC identify programmatic needs at specific sites and also provide technical assistance to assist in correcting identified workplace hazards. In addition to participating in AMEC training sessions and meetings whenever possible, OSHA will provide access to various training resources including those available through OSHA Training Institute courses.

The three-year partnership covers all projects performed by AMEC in the United States where the firm acts as the controlling contractor. The agreement will be reviewed annually and can be modified at any time and renewed at the end of the three year term.

AMEC provides design, project delivery and maintenance support to clients in the oil and gas, transportation, industrial and infrastructure sectors. AMEC has previously entered into local OSHA partnerships with the city of Chicago, as well as site-specific construction projects in New York City.
