Technical Data Center (TDC)

The Technical Data Center (TDC) operations include a Technical Information Resource Center and the Agency Docket Office.

Technical Information Resource Center
The Technical Information Resource Center provides safety and health information to OSHA staff, other Federal and State agencies and the general public, and coordinates technical safety and health information resources with OSHA national office and field staffs. The information in the Center is uniquely focused on occupational safety and health topics. The Center's shelves contain over 6,000 technical books and 200 journals on numerous subjects. Historical OSHA documents, as well as over 500,000 microfiche on safety and health topics, reside in the Center. OSHA staff also have access to industry-wide standards, on-line databases, CD and other technical information products. Upon request, TDC staff perform literature searches and develop bibliographies. The Center is a recognized Federal Library and borrows and lends technical books and publications.

The Docket Office The Docket Office serves as OSHA's central repository and dissemination center for Agency rulemaking, Paperwork Reduction Act Information Clearance Requests, and Advisory Committee documents. Docket materials are used extensively by Agency staff to develop and support rulemaking, litigate contested citations, and develop compliance interpretations. In addition, the Docket Office receives and processes numerous requests for information (FOIAs) and requests for authentication of documents for litigation.

OSHA's dockets are permanent records which contain millions of documents. Currently, there are over 450 dockets. To efficiently manage the voluminous paper, maintain file integrity, facilitate the retrieval of information and minimize space/storage requirements, the Technical Information and Retrieval System (TIRS) was introduced in 1992. The TIRS is an integrated document imaging system and is the primary retrieval/storage source for OSHA's dockets.
