"In fiscal year 2002, (Oct. 1, 2001 to Sept. 30, 2002) twelve Florida workers died from 'struck-by' injuries, making this type of accident the third most prevalent cause of on-the-job deaths in the state," said James D. Borders, OSHA's area director in Jacksonville. "This alliance will help employers, workers and the public recognize and eliminate safety hazards that lead to work-zone accidents." Borders and Luis R. Santiago, OSHA's Ft. Lauderdale area director, will sign the alliance with A. Monty Mountcastle, chief executive officer of the Sunshine Safety Council, Inc. OSHA and safety council officials agreed on a cooperative approach to reducing occupational transportation accidents. The common goal of both organizations is to save lives and to prevent accidents by sharing information, guidance and training resources.
