AG's Honors Program Participating Components

2008–2009

The components listed below will formally participate in the 2008- 2009 Honors Program. Actual hiring is subject to availability of funds; however, the components estimate that they will fill the number of positions listed below. Any additional eligibility criteria specified by a hiring component are effective at the time the application opens (July 25, 2008). Applicants must meet Honors Program eligibility requirements for all positions listed below.

Antitrust Division

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives
ATF attorneys serve as legal advisors to ATF Special Agents in the course of criminal investigations involving the unlawful possession and use of firearms and explosives. Our attorneys also represent the Government at administrative hearings involving the denial, revocation, or suspension of Federal firearms and explosives licenses and permits, as well as in actions against licensees and permittees. They provide both oral and written advice and their work includes analysis of Federal laws and regulations in support of law enforcement operations, and of subsequent prosecutions and sentencing of persons who violate the law.

Drug Enforcement Agency (Administrative Law Judges)
The DEA hires for 1 year judicial clerkships. These are not prosecutorial positions. Individuals hired as law clerks may reapply to the Honors Program in a subsequent year for permanent positions in other components provided they meet eligibility criteria.

Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR)
EOIR hires for 1-2 year judicial clerkships. Individuals hired as law clerks may reapply to the Honors Program in a subsequent year for permanent positions in other components provided they meet eligibility criteria. U.S. Citizenship required.

Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys (EOUSA)
Hiring for 2-year term appointments that may be converted to permanent positions as General Schedule attorneys or Assistant United States Attorneys. Honors Program attorneys will be assigned to EOUSA (located in Washington, D.C.), and may also include duty locations in U.S. Attorneys’ Offices (USAOs) nationwide, to be mutually agreed upon by EOUSA and the attorney, and may include rotational assignments through two or more USAOs nationwide. This is a pilot program and is open only to eligible applicants who are law school graduates who are already admitted to a bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) or who have taken a summer 2008 bar exam with results available in fall 2008. Current law students are not eligible and will not be considered. U.S. Citizenship required.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona
Criminal litigation positions (two-year term with the option to apply for full-time employment) in Tucson open to eligible applicants who are law school graduates who are already admitted to a bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) or who have taken a summer 2008 bar exam with results available in fall 2008. Current law students are not eligible and will not be considered. Candidates must be admitted to practice before entering on duty. Current law students are not eligible to apply. Early start dates are preferred. This District does not require admission to the Arizona bar. U.S. Citizenship required.

U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California

Hiring for Offices in Los Angeles, Santa Ana, or Riverside, California.
Open only to eligible applicants who are law school graduates who are already admitted to a bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) or who have taken a bar exam (results pending in fall 2008). Current law students are not eligible and will not be considered. Candidates must be admitted to practice before entering on duty. Current law students are not eligible to apply. Assistant U.S. Attorneys must become admitted to the California bar. U.S. Citizenship required.

U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California
Interviewing in San Diego, CA
Open only to eligible applicants who are law school graduates who are already admitted to a bar (any U.S. jurisdiction). Current law students are not eligible and will not be considered. The Southern District of California hires for 2 year term appointments that may lead to permanent employment. Assistant U.S. Attorneys must become admitted to the California bar. U.S. Citizenship required.

U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida

Open only to eligible applicants who are law school graduates who are already admitted to a bar (any U.S. jurisdiction). Current law students are not eligible and will not be considered. This District does not require AUSAs to become admitted to the Florida bar. U.S. Citizenship required

U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan
Interviewing in Grand Rapids, MI
Open only to eligible applicants who are law school graduates who are already admitted to a bar (any U.S. jurisdiction). Current law students are not eligible and will not be considered. This position will be either a two-year term appointment that may lead to permanent employment or permanent employment. Assistant U.S. Attorneys must become admitted to the Michigan bar. U.S. Citizenship required

The U.S. Trustees Offices will hire through the Honors Program on an informal basis this year. On the application, candidates will be able to indicate their interest in being included in a referral list provided to that component. This will not count against the four components to which candidates can formally apply. Informal participation is decentralized and controlled by the hiring component. Other components may opt to participate informally at any time.

U.S. TRUSTEES OFFICES (2-4)
These are permanent positions that may be offered at the Executive Office for U.S. Trustees (EOUST) in Washington, DC; or with 21 regional U.S. Trustees Offices; and 95 field offices nationwide.
