Janet E. Garvey
Ambassador, Cameroon
Term of Appointment: 09/13/2007 to present

Her Excellency Janet E. Garvey, of Massachusetts, arrived in Yaounde on September 13, 2007, to serve as Ambassador of the United States of America to the Republic of Cameroon. Ambassador Garvey was nominated by President Bush on March 26 and confirmed by the Senate on May 25, 2007.

Ms. Garvey, a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, served most recently as Deputy Coordinator at the Bureau of International Information Programs at the Department of State.  Prior to that, she served as Director of the Office of North Central European Affairs at the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the Department of State.

Earlier in her career, she served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, Hungary.  She has also served at the U.S. Consulate General in Cape Town, South Africa, the Consulate General in Leipzig, Germany, and at the U.S. Embassies in Yugoslavia, Finland, and the former East Germany, as well as in various positions at the United States Information Agency and the Department of State in Washington DC.

Ms. Garvey has received the Department of State’s or U.S. Information Agency’s Superior Honor Award and Meritorious Honor Award three times each.  Before joining the U.S. Information Agency, she served as an intern at the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington DC.  Ms. Garvey received her bachelor's degree from Northeastern University, where she was Valedictorian, and her Juris Doctor from the Georgetown University School of Law.

Ms. Garvey’s foreign languages are French, German, Bosnian/Serbo-Croatian and Hungarian.  Her organizational affiliations include the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the District of Columbia Bar Association.
