Marsha E. Barnes was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Suriname on August 11, 2003. She presented her credentials to His Excellency President Runaldo Ronald Venetiaan on September 8, 2003.
Ms. Barnes is a career member of the Foreign Service of the United States. She began her career as a vice consul in Georgetown, Guyana. She has served abroad in Bonn, Berlin and Moscow. Her service in the Department of State includes three years as Director of the Office of Caribbean Affairs, 1999-2002; Executive Assistant to the Under Secretary for Management; Deputy Executive Director of the Bureau of Consular Affairs; Chief of the European Assignments Division in the Bureau of Personnel; Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State.
Ms. Barnes is a graduate of Lake Forest College and a distinguished graduate of the National War College. She has a working knowledge of German, French, Russian and Dutch.
