Chris Stevens arrived in Tripoli in June 2007 as Deputy Chief of Mission and became Charge’ d’Affaires, a.i., in January 2008. He has served in a number of posts in the region, including Riyadh, Cairo, Damascus, Tunis, and Jerusalem. He has also served in Washington, as a State Department Fellow on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and in positions in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and the Office of the Under Secretary for Political Affairs.
Prior to joining the State Department in 1991, Chris was an international trade lawyer in Washington, DC. He also taught English as Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco. Chris speaks Arabic and French. He was born and raised in northern California, and has BA and JD degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and Hastings College of the Law. Released on October 14, 2008 |
