WASHINGTON -- The development of an electronic assistance tool that focuses on ergonomics for the printing industry highlights OSHA’s successful Alliance with the Graphics Arts Coalition (GAC), a relationship OSHA is eager to continue. Edwin J. Foulke, Jr., Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, renewed that Alliance for a second time recently saying the four-year-old agreement is working and much more is still left to be accomplished. "When OSHA first entered into the Alliance with GAC more than four years ago, there was no hesitation by all parties that positive results would be realized for employees throughout the printing industry. That has proven to be the case – this is an Alliance that needs to continue. We are proud to extend it." "Members of GAC remain committed to the Alliance with OSHA; we have found the relationship to be very beneficial as we move towards completion of major initiatives that will improve safety in the workplace," the GAC said in a joint statement. "We look forward to a continued cooperative effort as we focus on other high priority safety and health concerns." The new ergonomics eTool, including a lithography module, became available on OSHA’s Web site last March. OSHA and GAC updated that tool last month with the introduction of a new flexography module. Both organizations have also worked together to maintain and continually update the agency’s Printing Industry Safety and Health Topics page and share information on OSHA’s cooperative programs and compliance assistance resources at conferences and other events. Ergonomics will continue to highlight this Alliance; however, new focuses will include hazard communication, machine guarding and lockout/tagout issues. The Graphic Arts Coalition (GAC), formerly called the Printing Industry Alliance, is comprised of the Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation; the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association; the Flexographic Technical Association; and the Gravure Association of America (GAA). ###
