The United States and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Sign Memorandum of Understanding on AssistanceToday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Jordanian Foreign Minister Salah Al-Bashir signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide increased levels of assistance to Jordan.
To help meet shared goals of enhanced strategic dialogue and increased military cooperation, the MOU outlines the United States’ support for providing the Government of Jordan, over five years, $360 million per year in Economic Support Funds (ESF) and $300 million per year in Foreign Military Financing (FMF). This commitment is subject to the appropriation and availability of funds for these purposes.
This MOU is a step forward in our already strong bilateral relationship and reinforces our commitment to work together on a range of important issues – including advancing security and stability in the region, and encouraging economic development and political reform. Moreover, the MOU sets forth our intent to establish a bilateral economic framework and pledges to continue our active dialogue on security, economic policy, and political reform and performance, in accordance with the priorities established in Jordan’s National Agenda.
We look forward to deepening our long-standing partnership with Jordan.
