KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today recognized Omaha Steaks International Inc.'s plant in Snyder, Neb., as a "star" site in its prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). The ceremony was held at the plant in Snyder. Omaha Steaks employs 85 employees who process meat products. "Omaha Steaks has exhibited excellence in safety and health management," said Charles E. Adkins, CIH, OSHA regional administrator in Kansas City. "The company's outstanding efforts include management commitment to safety and health and employee involvement in safety and health programs." OSHA's VPP recognizes and promotes effective workplace safety and health management. Companies in VPP achieve average injury rates 50 percent lower than other companies in their industry. More than 1,700 work sites representing more than 270 industries nationwide participate in the program. Information kits about the VPP application and approval process are available from the OSHA VPP manager at the Kansas City regional office at (816) 426 5861. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
