WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today renewed a partnership with the Ford Motor Company, the Ford subsidiary Automotive Components Holdings, LLC (ACH-LLC), and the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) to reduce employee injuries and illnesses at Ford and ACH production facilities. "We are confident that today's renewal will accelerate the partners' efforts to continue improving safety and health in the automobile industry," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "In renewing the agreement, the UAW, Ford and ACH recognize the importance of safety and health at auto manufacturing facilities. The results of this partnership have helped prevent injuries and illnesses for Ford and ACH employees around the country." "Pulling together the leadership and resources of Ford, ACH, the UAW and OSHA creates a powerful team as we work together to improve our already-high standards of health and safety in our plants," said Joe Hinrichs, Ford Motor Company vice president, North America Manufacturing. "Ford is proud of its record of significantly reducing serious on-the-job injuries in recent years and we know that safety always must be top-of-mind. That's why we welcome the opportunity this agreement provides." Every Ford and ACH manufacturing location in the agreement will work with OSHA to identify, evaluate and control health and safety hazards. A steering committee has been created consisting of representatives from OSHA, Ford, ACH-LLC, and the UAW to manage and operate the partnership. As part of the partnership effort, OSHA staff conduct annual on-site, non-enforcement inspections at every participating location. During these "OSHA Day Meetings," OSHA reviews accident and injury reports from the previous year as well as prior comprehensive safety evaluations. OSHA inspectors also conduct an informal walk-through of the manufacturing facility. In addition to the agreement with OSHA, Ford, ACH, and the UAW have partnerships with OSHA State Plan States in Michigan and Kentucky. Since OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program began in 1998, it has formed more than 450 partnerships covering more than 33,000 employers and almost 1 million employees across the United States. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
