TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Girl Scouts of Westchester*Putnam Inc. are teaming up to educate area Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts about workplace safety and careers in occupational safety and health. The two agencies will present a free half-day workshop Saturday, March 18, from 9:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Girl Scout membership/program center, 2 Great Oak Lane, Pleasantville. Individual sessions will feature hands-on activities to give the Girl Scouts the opportunity to experience safe and healthful work practices, spot workplace hazards and explore careers in occupational safety and health. Participants will view demonstrations of chemical reactions and personal protective equipment; watch a puppet show on workplace safety; view the video "Safe Work/Safe Workers;" surf OSHA's Teen Workers Page; create posters or cartoons about workplace safety; learn about workplace rights and protections; and hear from women safety and health professionals about the variety of careers available in occupational safety and health and what's required to pursue those careers. Presenters will include industrial hygienists, safety managers, administrators, compliance assistance specialists and other women who work for OSHA or area companies that belong to OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs. "This is a marvelous opportunity to provide the women of tomorrow's workplace with important and practical knowledge and to do so in a way that's both informative and fun," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. The workshops are open to the news media and coverage is encouraged.
