AVENEL, N.J. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Middlesex County Regional Chamber of Commerce renewed a workplace safety and health alliance designed to foster safe and healthy work environments, and to continue to provide leadership and assistance to member organizations and the general public. Robert D. Kulick, director, and Michael Yarnell, compliance assistance specialist of OSHA's area office in Avenel, represented the agency at a recent signing ceremony. "OSHA and the Middlesex County Regional Chamber of Commerce recognize the value of a collaborative relationship that will help foster workplace safety and health for area employees, said Louis Ricca Jr., acting regional administrator in New York. "This renewed alliance will allow us to further the work the Avenel Area Office started three years ago, and we look forward to continuing this successful effort." OSHA and the Middlesex County Regional Chamber of Commerce will work together through the alliance to provide local businesses and community organizations with information, guidance and access to training resources to assist them in establishing effective safety and health management systems. The original alliance, initiated in November 2005, is being renewed for two more years. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative programs. OSHA currently has more than 480 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. OSHA has improved workplace safety and health over the past 37 years. This success is reflected in the latest data (2006) showing the lowest national injury and illness incidence rate that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has ever recorded. OSHA will continue to work diligently to focus its resources where they will have the most impact in assuring that every working man and woman returns home safely every day. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
