SAN ANTONIO -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today sponsored the Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign at Southwest High School Construction Career Academy in San Antonio, supporting the agency's national 2008 campaign, which focuses on construction. "We have a strong and longstanding relationship with the construction community," said Dean McDaniel, OSHA's regional administrator in Dallas. "Through this campaign, we hope to instill a culture of safety at a young age in America's next generation of employees to ensure that teens go home safe and healthy at the end of the day." The kickoff event in San Antonio featured students from the Construction Career Academy demonstrating their skills involving excavation and trenching, scaffolding and the proper use of personal protection equipment. Safety and health instruction and information, as well as hands-on demonstrations in these areas, was provided by Rupert Chavez, assistant director, and Anthony Incristi, OSHA's compliance assistance specialist, from the agency's San Antonio District Office. The ABC was represented by Bob Jett, director of education, and Hal Hentz, education coordinator. OSHA, the San Antonio Chapter of ABC and the Southwest Independent School District Southwest High School Construction Career Academy entered an alliance in 2004 to enhance the safety awareness skills of students entering the construction field. Students participating in today's event will receive OSHA's 10-hour safety course certificate of training. The campaign is part of OSHA's Young Worker Initiative, which provides information and resources to teenagers, parents, educators and employers to ensure that youth have safe and rewarding work experiences. Earlier this week, Secretary of Labor Chao unveiled the national campaign during NBC's TODAY show. To learn more about workplace safety for teens, visit www.osha.gov/teens. OSHA and its regional partners are striving to reduce work-related injuries among teenagers by teaching them on-the-job safety and integration of principles into their work tasks from this early age. Through working with many strong national and regional Alliance Program participants and other cooperative programs, OSHA plans to reach more than three million teens who work during the summer. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees.
