Region 3 News Release: 08-496-PHI (osha 08-057) April 17, 2008 Contact: Alisha Brown Phone: 215-861-5101 U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA recognizes PPL Martins Creek Power Plant for stellar workplace safety and health BANGOR, Pa. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has certified PPL Martins Creek Power Plant as a "star" site in its prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). During a recent ceremony at the company's Bangor facility, Kevin Kilp, OSHA's acting area director in Allentown, Pa., presented the company with the VPP star flag. "PPL Martins Creek Power Plant has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to employee safety and health," said Kilp. "The company has maintained an injury and illness rate below the industry average for three years." PPL Martins facility, located in Lower Mount Bethel Township, is one of five fossil plants owned by PPL Inc. Originally built in 1954, the facility has a generating capacity of approximately 1,750 megawatts, which supplies power to 1.7 million customers in central eastern Pennsylvania. The company has 176 employees. The star designation is the highest level of recognition that an employer can achieve in the VPP. Designed for worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health programs, the VPP is open to all industries and to companies with injury rates below their respective industries' national averages. More than 1,945 worksites nationwide have earned entry into OSHA's VPP. The VPP has proven over the years to be an effective means of reducing injuries, illnesses, fatalities and costs, while fostering a more productive workforce and increasing employee morale. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
