COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Reducing injuries and worksite hazards, and enhancing safety and health for home building employees in central Ohio are the goals of a new alliance joining the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Central Ohio Homebuilders Safety Alliance. Deborah Zubaty, director of OSHA's Columbus Area Office, attended today's signing ceremony. "OSHA and homebuilders in central Ohio will work closely to share best practices, as well as develop and implement safety and health training for temporary employees," she said. "If we can provide these employees with the ability to anticipate, identify and eliminate work-related hazards, we will have made significant progress toward eliminating job-related injuries." The homebuilders alliance represents central Ohio builders who construct the majority of new houses in the area. The builders and OSHA have come together to help address serious hazards and deaths occurring to individuals working in the residential construction industry. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships. OSHA currently has 456 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
