Region 4 News Release: USDOL: 02-160 Monday, July 23, 2002 Contact: Jo Anne Burgoyne Phone: (404) 562-2076 OSHA To Give Free Training On Reducing Amputation Hazards MOBILE, Ala. -- Assisting South Alabama employers to identify, reduce and eliminate workplace amputation hazards is the goal of a half-day training session to be held July 30 at the International Trade Center, 250 Water Street, Mobile. The free training, which begins at 8:30 a.m., is co-sponsored by the University of Alabama's SafeState Consultation Services, Small Business Development Centers and the Mobile OSHA area office. The session will focus on hazards associated with saws, shears, slicers, slitters and various mechanical power presses --- equipment which accounts for most amputations. Similar sessions were held recently in Dothan and Montgomery. "An average of 10,000 on-the-job amputations occur each year in the United States, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data." said Lana Graves, OSHA's Mobile area director. "The training is designed to prevent amputation accidents which affect so many American workers."
