ALBANY, N.Y. -- Promoting safe and healthful working conditions at small businesses is the goal of a new alliance between the Albany area office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the New York State Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) for the Albany, North Country, and the Mid-Hudson regions. "Alliances such as this are the cornerstone in our cooperative efforts to ensure safe and healthy workplaces," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "Working together with the centers, we can reduce injuries and illnesses in small businesses by helping them identify and correct hazards before they hurt workers." OSHA's Albany area office will work with the small business development centers located in Albany, Plattsburgh and Kingston to develop and disseminate information on safety excellence and management. They will provide hazard recognition training for small businesses and promote participation by small businesses in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) and the New York State On-site Consultation's Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). The alliance was signed Nov. 14 by Clark; John Tomich, OSHA's Albany area director; James King, director, New York State SBDC; William Brigham, director, SBDC at the University of Albany; Arnaldo Sehwerert, director, SBDC at Mid-Hudson; and Delena Clark, director, SBDC at North Country. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Secretary Elaine L Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. OSHA has created more than 350 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
