Building Inspectors Will Receive Hazard Prevention Training BOSTON -- Reducing and preventing construction workers' exposure to safety and health hazards is the goal of a new alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Massachusetts Division of Occupational Safety's Consultation Program and the Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards (MBBRS). OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. Under the alliance, OSHA and the state agencies will jointly develop and deliver training programs on construction hazards to about 150 municipal building inspectors per year. The training, which will include OSHA's 10-hour construction safety course, will focus on construction safety and health issues, including falls, electrical, struck-by and caught between hazards as well as lead and silica exposures. "This is an exceptionally effective means of extending safety and health to worksites throughout the Commonwealth," said Marthe Kent, OSHA's New England regional administrator. "It will equip inspectors with the knowledge and ability to spot potential hazards on jobsites and help employers address them before workers are injured." Signing the alliance were Kent; Robert Anderson, deputy regional administrator, MBBRS; Robert Prezioso, commissioner, Mass. Division of Occupational Safety; and OSHA Area Directors Brenda Gordon (Braintree), Richard J. Fazzio (Methuen) and Ronald E. Morin (Springfield). The alliance will also help MBBRS build relationships with OSHA's Massachusetts offices to address construction hazards and encourages participation in OSHA's cooperative programs, including compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Program, safety consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 325 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
