Focus on Preventing Accidents at Construction Projects SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the South Dakota Building Chapter of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) have formed a partnership to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on construction projects in South Dakota. The statewide Construction Health and Safety Excellence (CHASE) partnership will provide incentives for AGC chapter members that maintain excellent safety programs. OSHA safety and health partnerships are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative initiatives with companies and trade associations. "This partnership formalizes our cooperative relationship. It stands as a statement of our commitment to work together to improve safety and health on construction projects," said Bruce Beelman, OSHA area office director in Bismarck. The goal of the CHASE partnership is to reduce by five percent annually the days away, restricted workdays and transfers (DART) rate due to injuries and illnesses affecting workers employed by participant employers. The emphasis will be on reducing injuries resulting from hazards that are the four leading causes of death on construction sites: falls, struck-by, caught in/between and electrocutions. Since the start of the partnership program between OSHA and AGC chapters across the country, more than 100 local and statewide programs have been implemented to prevent accidents and promote health and safety. OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program began in 1998. The agency has formed more than 300 partnerships, impacting over 13,000 employers and 573,000 employees across the United States. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
