ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Improving job safety and health for workers in western New York is the goal of a new alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Rochester's Catholic Family Center (CFC) and the New York State Department of Labor. The primary focus of this alliance will be to reach workers who are not proficient in English. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve health and safety for workers through cooperative partnerships. "Through this alliance we will reach out to build trust, raise awareness and educate both employers and workers about safety and health," said Patricia Clark, regional administrator of OSHA in New York. "We recognize the value of a collaborative relationship to achieve these goals." Through the alliance, CFC and OSHA will conduct training and education in Spanish, English and other languages so CFC staff can accurately convey vital job safety and health information to clients and employers. CFC staff will be able to take OSHA's 30-hour construction or general industry "train the trainer" courses to qualify to teach multi-lingual clients. The alliance will also urge employers who utilize CFC's employment services to take part in other OSHA programs to improve job safety and health. Signing the alliance were Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator; Arthur Dube, director of OSHA's Buffalo area office; Carolyn Portanova, President and CEO, Catholic Family Center; and Greg Conrad, Supervising Safety and Health Inspector, NYS Department of Labor. CFC is Rochester's largest family service provider, a comprehensive agency that houses nine major service areas for people of all ages, races, religions and socioeconomic circumstances, including refugee, immigration and employment services. The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 230 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
