Focus to continue on better health and safety for the construction industry WASHINGTON -- Keeping America's construction workers safe on the job will be the continued focus of a renewed Alliance between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), OSHA Administrator John Henshaw announced today. Henshaw signed a two-year renewal for the CMAA's Alliance that will continue to address construction management issues in the workplace. "Our Alliance with CMAA has helped increase the awareness of how safety and health impacts construction management issues," Henshaw explained. "The continuation of our collaborative efforts is vital to ensure that safety and health issues play a major role in the planning, design and construction of projects from inception to completion. Such efforts will save lives, and we're delighted that CMAA wants to continue working with us." Added CMAA Executive Director Bruce D'Agostino: "CMAA is very pleased to renew our Alliance agreement with OSHA. Our Alliance will help us continue to provide our members with information on important industry safety practices. And, since professional construction managers are the leaders in the construction process, they are in an excellent position to ensure a top down awareness of these safety practices on America's projects and programs." As a result of the Alliance, CMAA representatives worked with OSHA to develop a Safety and Health Topics page for construction management. The page helps construction managers improve their awareness and knowledge of common safety issues that exist in today's construction industry. CMAA also developed a safety page on their website with construction-related safety and health information and links to regulatory agencies and other associations. Over the past year and a half, OSHA personnel have made presentations at CMAA annual and chapter meetings helping to increase the construction managers' recognition of OSHA's role on a jobsite. The ultimate goal is for construction managers to place more emphasis on including safety and health in the complete construction process. The Alliance will continue to focus on reducing and preventing exposure to construction industry hazards and increasing access to industry safety and health information and training resources. Additionally, the Alliance's implementation team is discussing a number of activities for the renewal, including the development of a safety program targeted to medium-sized contractors. CMAA promotes professionalism and excellence in the management of the construction process and the acceptance of construction management as a professional discipline. The association's membership includes more than 2,000 firms and individuals representing owners, engineers, architects, contractors, educators, and students. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
