Focus continues on reducing fall and material handling hazards and auto collisions WASHINGTON -- A trade association of merit shop electrical and systems contractors agreed to extend its Alliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) during a signing ceremony here today. OSHA Administrator John Henshaw signed a two-year renewal for the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Alliance in order to continue providing more opportunities for advancing workplace safety and health. "It's been just more than a year and a half since signing the Alliance with IEC and we can already see the progress of our cooperative efforts," Henshaw said. "I'm pleased that the association wants to continue working with us to further safety and health for workers in the electrical industry." "Our workers are our most valuable resource and IEC has a long history of working to establish programs that will ensure their safety," added J.B. Wise, IEC National President. "Renewing this Alliance with OSHA continues to show our commitment to the men and women involved in this important industry." As a direct result of the Alliance, OSHA and IEC have developed a web-based training tool ("eTool") called Ergonomic Solutions for Electrical Contractors. A motor vehicle safety workshop was also developed and presented at the 2003 Annual Convention and IEC Electric Expo. Through OSHA's and IEC's efforts, a safety-related links page was created for the IEC website, and a Safety and Health Topics page focusing on the electrical contractors industry was added to OSHA's website. IEC also participated as an exhibitor at the 2nd Annual OSHA Compliance Assistance Conference inVienna, VA last June. The Alliance has also allowed participants to publish several articles in trade newsletters and magazines focusing on the goals of the agreement. The renewal calls for continuing to provide IEC members and others with information and guidance on worker safety and health matters, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to falls, rear-end auto collisions, and material handling hazards. It also outlines specific communications goals, including the publishing of articles and features on both organizations' websites that focus on ergonomics, falls and OSHA's cooperative programs. IEC, headquartered in Alexandria, VA, is a trade association representing more than 3,200 merit shop electrical and systems contractors in 73 chapters nationwide. IEC was established in 1957.
