BOSTON, Mass. -- Eliminating job hazards at construction sites is the goal of a newly-signed alliance between the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Braintree and Methuen, Mass., area offices and the Construction Safety Roundtable of Eastern Massachusetts. "Mutual effort and the cooperation of management, labor and OSHA will promote a culture of safety and a focus on accident prevention," said Brenda Gordon, OSHA's Braintree area director. Under the alliance, OSHA and the Roundtable will meet every month to exchange technical information and safe work practices, update members on OSHA procedures and policy issues and provide workshop instruction on construction safety and health. The meetings will strengthen communication among OSHA, the Roundtable and related companies, to encourage cooperation with OSHA and foster understanding of the safety and health needs of the companies and their workers. They will also promote the use of OSHA outreach services and provide access to OSHA compliance assistance specialists and free safety consultation services offered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The alliance was signed June 17 in Braintree by Gordon; Richard Fazzio, OSHA's Methuen area director; and representatives from 51 member companies of the Construction Safety Roundtable. An implementation team with representatives from the Roundtable and OSHA will meet at least quarterly. Team members will determine procedures for the alliance, identify roles and responsibilities, and track, analyze and share information on activities and results. An annual evaluation will measure the effectiveness of the alliance, which will remain in effect for one year with automatic annual renewal after that.
