TRADE NEWS RELEASE March 19, 2003 Contact: Bill Wright Phone: (202) 693-1999 AMERICAN COLLEGE OF OCCUPATIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE ALIGNS WITH OSHA WASHINGTON -- A leading organization dedicated to preventing and managing occupational and environmental injuries and illnesses joined in a formal Alliance today with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. A particular concentration of the new Alliance is preventing ergonomic-related injuries in the workplace. The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) added its name to the list of 21 other organizations that have formalized Alliances with OSHA. ACOEM also becomes the 12th group to focus specifically on ergonomic-related injuries. This Alliance will give OSHA and ACOEM the opportunity to develop training modules and educational programs for health care providers on ergonomics issues, and facilitate the training of occupational medicine residents in recognizing and treating injuries that may be ergonomic-related. "Our relationship with ACOEM has always been one dedicated to protecting the health and safety of workers," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "With this Alliance, we're able to tap the significant resources of medical experience and expertise that ACOEM occupational and environmental physicians have in identifying and treating musculoskeletal injuries." "ACOEM looks forward to working with OSHA to put the collective expertise of both organizations to work to protect the health and safety of America's workers," added ACOEM President Edward Bernacki. "Occupational physicians who are cross-trained in medicine and workplace health and safety are key to further reductions of on-the-job injuries and illnesses." The agreement will pave the way for OSHA and ACOEM to promote safe and healthful working conditions by providing health care providers with ACOEM-developed information and guidance to recognize, diagnose and treat ergonomic injuries. The effectiveness of ACOEM's ergonomic programs and best practices will be promoted at various opportunities, including conferences, local meetings, speaking engagements, and other events. OSHA and ACOEM will develop and disseminate information at conferences, events, and through media outlets, including their individual web sites. Both organizations have agreed to share information on innovative solutions to ergonomic problems, including programs already developed by ACOEM. OSHA and ACOEM will encourage wide implementation in industry of ergonomic hazard recognition strategies and analytical tools that work, and stress the importance of sound ergonomic programs to business. An international medical society of more than 6,000 members, ACOEM provides leadership to promote optimal health and safety of workers, workplaces, and environments.
