OSHA FORMALIZES ALLIANCE WITH THE
SEALANT WATERPROOFING AND RESTORATION INSTITUTE
Will focus on reducing silica and lead exposure, improving fall protection

WASHINGTON -- OSHA Administrator John Henshaw announced today a formal Alliance with the Sealant Waterproofing and Restoration Institute to focus on safety and health protection efforts for workers in that industry.

"SWRI has joined a growing number of organizations and associations who are committed to assuring workers safety and health remains a core value," Henshaw said. "This Alliance focuses on promoting good working conditions for the thousands of workers who apply and work with sealant, waterproofing and restoration products. We look forward to helping the Institute's leadership achieve that goal."

"We pursued the Alliance with OSHA to promote the importance of ongoing safety education in our industry," said Robert A. Forrer, President of SWRI. "With representatives of both organizations working together, we should be able to achieve our goal of increasing safe and healthful working conditions." David Carter, SWRI President-elect added that he was pleased with the new Alliance, saying "it will formalize our commitment as an organization to the safety and well-being of our employees."

This Alliance will focus on reducing and preventing exposure to lead and silica, as well as emphasize safety concerns in the areas of confined spaces, fall protection, and staging requirements. Both OSHA and SWRI will help educate workers in the industry on these topics, with the overall goal of teaching them how to control the hazards and preventing exposure in the workplace.

To help accomplish that, OSHA and SWRI will develop and disseminate information and guidance on relevant safety and health topics at SWRI conferences as well as through print and electronic media. Speeches and other public appearances by SWRI executives and some of its members offer another channel to promote the national dialogue on workplace safety and health. SWRI will be encouraged to endorse mentoring among its members and participation in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Program, Consultations, and Strategic Partnerships.

A team of OSHA and SWRI representatives will meet quarterly to track and share information on activities and results. The agreement will remain in effect for two years.

SWRI is an international trade association that represents the commercial sealant, waterproofing and restoration construction industry of contractors, manufacturers and design professionals.

OSHA is dedicated to saving lives, preventing injuries and illnesses, and protecting America's workers. Safety and health add value to business, the workplace and life. For more information, visit www.osha.gov.
