TRADE NEWS RELEASE January 31, 2003 Contact: Bill Wright Phone: (202) 693-1999 OSHA, SHIPBUILDERS COUNCIL FORM ALLIANCE Will focus on reducing shipyard safety and health hazards WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) will work together to foster safer and more healthful work environments in American shipyards, OSHA Administrator John L. Henshaw announced today. "The rates of injuries and illnesses for shipyard work are more than twice that of construction and general industry," said Henshaw. "OSHA continues to target this industry in order to reduce these rates and prevent fatalities, and we're pleased that SCA wants to join with us in a collaborative effort for continuous safety and health improvement." Under the terms of the Alliance, OSHA and SCA will work together to increase access for shipyard employees to safety and health information and outreach programs, including ergonomics. Both organizations will develop and disseminate injury and hazard information at conferences and events, and through print and electronic media, including using OSHA's and SCA's websites. Means will also be made available to cross-train OSHA personnel and industry safety and health practitioners in SCA's best practices or effective approaches. SCA will share with OSHA up-to-date shipyard information, such as injury, hazard and workforce trends, to help identify the top priorities for developing viable safety and health training and outreach programs for SCA members. SCA members will be encouraged to participate in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Program, the Consultation Program, and SHARP. OSHA and SCA will also share information on best practices of SCA members/worksites with others in the industry through programs and materials developed by both organizations. Finally, OSHA and SCA will convene and participate in stakeholder groups, roundtable discussions or other forums to discuss priority issues with the goal of developing innovative solutions to specific injury and hazard issues in shipyards. A team of OSHA and SCA representatives will meet quarterly to track and share information on activities and results. The agreement will remain in effect for two years and will then be automatically renewed each year thereafter.
